The Stonehenge School, Amesbury

In its own words: "We are a truly comprehensive school, catering for both boys and girls between the ages of 11 to 16. Our total number on PAN exceeds 1000 pupils meaning that we are a large secondary school serving the local area."

From the headteacher's welcome: "We are a large and vibrant secondary school , home to around 1,100 pupils from Amesbury and the surrounding area, including many from service families. Our size allows us to offer a broad and ambitious curriculum , while our strong community spirit ensures that every child is known, valued and supported to succeed."

In 2026, pupils at The Stonehenge School averaged an Attainment 8 score of 39.2, the average grade across their best eight GCSEs. The average state school scored 45.9 in Wiltshire and 47 across England.

32% passed English and maths at grade 5 or above, against 44% in Wiltshire and 47% in England.

That is up from 37.4 in 2025.

Its most recent Progress 8 score, for 2024, was -0.42: pupils made below average progress compared with pupils nationally who started secondary school at the same level. Progress 8 was not published for 2026.

Disadvantaged pupils averaged an Attainment 8 of 25.1, against 41.9 for other pupils at the school - a gap of 16.8 points.

Pupils sat GCSEs in 26 subjects; after English and maths, the most popular were Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

For September 2026 entry, 185 families put The Stonehenge School as their first choice and 308 named it as one of their preferences, for 195 places offered. It had fewer first-choice applications than places. Every family who put it first was offered a place there for 2026 entry.

Of the 200 pupils who finished Year 11 in 2023/24, 88% stayed in education or training for at least two terms, including 69% to a further education college and 5% into work.

16.4% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, well below the average state school (25%), and 5.5% speak English as an additional language, against 18.8% on average, according to the 2026 school census.

The largest ethnic groups are White British (77%), Black (8%) and Mixed (6%).

There is no railway, tram or Underground station within about three miles of The Stonehenge School.

13 bus stops are within a five-minute walk; the closest is Queensberry Road (sw-bound), 110 metres away.

In August 2026, police recorded 75 crimes within a mile of the school, most often violence and sexual offences, anti-social behaviour and public order offences. That is well above the typical figure around schools in Wiltshire (34), as is usual near a town centre.

In 2024/25, The Stonehenge School issued 140 suspensions, 13 for every 100 pupils (the average state school: 6.3), and no permanent exclusions.
