What This School Does Well

This is a warm, inclusive school where staff know families well and treat pupils with kindness and respect. The school has a strong focus on reading, with expert phonics teaching helping all children become confident readers. Pupils are happy, well-behaved and develop positive attitudes to learning from an early age.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent early reading teaching with high staff expertise in phonics and well-organised reading sessions
  • Ambitious, well-planned curriculum that builds knowledge and skills from early years through Year 6
  • Effective support for pupils with special educational needs who achieve well
  • Strong pupil behaviour and positive attitudes to learning
  • Good personal development through trips, residential visits and community work

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching does not consistently check pupils' understanding in all subjects, meaning some misconceptions are missed and work is not always matched to what pupils know
  • Pupils lack sufficient understanding of some British values (individual liberty, rule of law) and protected characteristics
  • In some subjects, pupils are not given activities that allow them to develop deeper understanding

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with clear systems in place to keep pupils safe.

Extracurricular Activities

School production, junior road safety officers, trips, residential visits, before- and after-school club

The Gedney Hill Church of England VC Primary School is an inclusive school where pupils thrive and behave well. The school has made significant improvements since its last inspection, with pupils now achieving well across a carefully designed curriculum.
