Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Parents speak in glowing terms about their children's experiences at the nursery. The school provides a nurturing environment where children feel secure and develop both academically and in confidence. The flexible extended provision (8am to 6pm for up to 40 children) meets the needs of working families, while the carefully planned education and care ensures children receive varied experiences without repetition.

Key Strengths

  • Exceptional quality of teaching and interaction with children, with staff trained to question and challenge children to extend their learning
  • Outstanding outdoor provision with adventisement surfaces, slopes and equipment that promotes adventurous play and physical development
  • Excellent specialist resource base for children with social and communication difficulties, where children make great strides in learning routines and communication
  • Strong focus on speaking and understanding with numerous opportunities for imaginative role play
  • Effective integration of two-year-olds into the provision who make significant progress by age three

Areas for Improvement

  • Website does not contain all required information about the work of the governing body
  • School improvement plan covers one year only and does not reflect longer-term priorities such as 30 hours childcare provision
  • Need to provide more support for some parents, especially those who do not speak English as first language, to contribute to their child's learning records

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - the nursery operates safe systems for recruiting and vetting staff, provides staff with wide-ranging training on child protection, and maintains secure systems for tracking and responding to concerns.

Extracurricular Activities

Parent workshops on managing behaviour, getting ready for school, and numeracy

Surbiton Children's Centre Nursery is an outstanding nursery school that has maintained its excellent quality of education since the last inspection. The leadership team provides high-quality learning experiences in a flexible way that meets the needs of families.
