What This School Does Well

Stonegate School excels at making pupils feel happy, safe and accepted. Staff take time to know each pupil as an individual and provide exceptional personal development opportunities that build confidence and real-world skills. Pupils develop remarkable resilience and independence, with strong support from a caring team that works closely with families and external agencies.

Key Strengths

  • Staff show deep care for pupils' well-being and never give up on them, helping pupils feel accepted and motivated to work hard
  • Exceptional personal development programme with a vast range of experiences beyond the classroom, building confidence, resilience and social skills
  • Effective identification of pupils' reading needs with quick catch-up support in phonics
  • Strong partnership working with parents, therapists and external agencies to meet individual needs
  • High expectations and individualised support help pupils develop independence and keep going when work is difficult

Areas for Improvement

  • Some subjects lack clearly defined smaller steps of knowledge, making it difficult for staff to ensure pupils learn everything needed
  • Staff occasionally do not check that pupils have secure prior knowledge before introducing new learning, which can hamper progress
  • Need to support staff in better identifying and addressing gaps in pupils' knowledge before moving to new content

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with staff responding sensitively to pupils' emotional needs and creating a culture that puts pupils' interests first.
