What This School Does Well

This is a caring school where children are happy, well-behaved and enjoy coming to learn. The school has made good improvements to its curriculum recently and provides excellent opportunities for enrichment through trips, sports clubs and outdoor activities. Staff are supportive and create a safe environment where all pupils, including those with additional needs, are included and valued.

Key Strengths

  • Strong behaviour and positive attitudes to learning, with calm and purposeful lessons
  • Early years provision is good, with children developing well in communication, language, independence and curiosity
  • Effective safeguarding arrangements and strong pastoral care that helps pupils feel safe
  • Well-planned enrichment activities including residential visits, sports clubs, museums trips and outdoor exercise
  • Good identification and inclusion of pupils with additional needs, working well with parents and external professionals

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils have gaps in learning from previous curriculum weaknesses, but teachers move on to new content before addressing these gaps
  • School not consistently checking how well teachers deliver the curriculum or where improvements are needed
  • Phonics programme recently introduced but implementation is not fully effective
  • Trust and governing body have not acted quickly enough to tackle underachievement
  • Support for pupils with SEND in their learning is not as effective as it should be

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with appropriate systems in place to keep pupils safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Residential visits, museum trips, library visits, park visits, sports clubs and tournaments, pasta club (healthy meal preparation), lunchtime helper roles, buddy roles, house captain positions, school council

St Wulstan's and St Edmund's Catholic Academy is a lively, caring primary school where pupils are happy and well-behaved. However, weaknesses in curriculum design and delivery mean pupils are not achieving as well as they should.
