Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

St Petroc's is an inclusive school where children learn to read fluently and develop a love of reading from the early years. Teachers make lessons interesting and purposeful, and pupils respond well to high expectations for their behaviour and learning. The school offers plentiful opportunities for pupils to develop their talents and interests through a broad range of activities and enrichment programmes.

Key Strengths

  • Strong emphasis on teaching pupils to read successfully and swiftly from Nursery onwards, with most pupils reading fluently and with joy
  • Clear, predictable lesson structures across the curriculum that help pupils remember and apply key knowledge effectively
  • Improved attendance through collaborative work with families and other agencies
  • Broad range of outdoor and adventurous activities enriching pupils' experiences
  • Inclusive, family-oriented environment where bullying is rare and pupils feel well looked after

Areas for Improvement

  • Writing curriculum asks pupils to write creatively before they have secured basic letter formation and punctuation skills, limiting their ability to complete writing tasks well
  • Inconsistent processes for identifying pupils with SEND needs early and precisely enough
  • Some pupils with severe learning difficulties do not have specific or measurable individual plans to support their learning effectively

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

Extracurricular Activities

Reading ambassadors, supporting younger pupils at breaktimes, outdoor and adventurous activities programme

St Petroc's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School is a strong and improving school that has successfully addressed weaknesses from its previous inspection. The school provides an ambitious, coherently sequenced curriculum where pupils learn well and respond positively to high expectations.
