Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's July 2023 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

St Matthew's creates a nurturing Christian community where pupils feel safe, happy and valued. Teachers have strong subject knowledge and check understanding regularly, helping pupils who need extra support to catch up quickly. The school has worked hard to develop confident speakers who use subject-specific language, and reading is a clear priority with systematic phonics teaching.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on reading with well-trained staff implementing phonics consistently, and quick intervention for pupils who fall behind
  • Excellent development of pupils' spoken language and use of subject-specific vocabulary from early years onwards
  • Ambitious curriculum in some subjects with carefully planned learning progressions that help pupils understand complex concepts
  • High expectations for behaviour with polite, kind pupils who listen well and engage in lessons
  • Effective support for pupils with special educational needs through skilled task adaptation

Areas for Improvement

  • In some subjects, the important knowledge and vocabulary pupils need to learn have not been clearly identified, affecting depth of understanding
  • Newly appointed subject leaders need to refine curriculum planning to ensure consistent focus on core ideas across all subjects

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with strong staff training, good knowledge of families, immediate reporting of concerns, and effective partnerships with external agencies.

Extracurricular Activities

World Book Day, Storytelling Picnic, culture days, residential visits, gardening, crafts, sports, community fundraising, breakfast club, after-school club

St Matthew's CofE Primary School is a small, happy school where pupils benefit from warm relationships and a strong Christian community. The school has been rated as Good across all areas.
