What This School Does Well

St Mary's creates a nurturing environment where children develop strong relationships with staff and each other. The school places reading at the centre of learning and gives pupils plenty of hands-on experiences, including outdoor learning at the school grounds and a variety of enrichment activities. Parents appreciate the caring approach and open communication they have with staff.

Key Strengths

  • Reading is at the heart of the curriculum with quality texts introduced from early years, fostering a genuine love of reading
  • Pupils are confident communicators who engage in lively, respectful discussions and make links across topics thoughtfully
  • Strong relationships between staff and pupils, built on care and respect, help pupils feel safe and supported
  • Excellent behaviour and attendance, with pupils being well-mannered and polite
  • Inclusive approach ensures pupils with SEND have their needs accurately identified and well-supported

Areas for Improvement

  • Assessment in phonics is not consistently used effectively, meaning some pupils' specific learning gaps are not identified and support strategies are not as effective as they could be
  • Low-level disruptive behaviour in lessons is not always addressed consistently by adults, which can affect other pupils' learning and engagement

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective.

Extracurricular Activities

Outdoor learning at the Croft on the Heath, clubs, trips, visits, allotment growing and cooking, theme weeks, lunchtime clubs including outside library

St Mary's CofE (A) First School is a warm and welcoming school where pupils thrive based on the values of 'love' and 'respect'. The school has effectively maintained the good standards from its previous inspection.
