Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

St John's excels at creating a nurturing, inclusive community where every pupil feels safe and valued. The school provides excellent pastoral care and targeted support for disadvantaged pupils and those with additional needs. Staff and pupils have warm, respectful relationships and behaviour is consistently positive.

Key Strengths

  • Strong pastoral care and inclusion - staff support all pupils well, including disadvantaged pupils and those with special needs
  • Excellent behaviour and attendance - pupils behave well, bullying is rare, and persistent absence is lower than national levels
  • Positive school community - warm relationships between staff and pupils create a safe, welcoming environment where pupils feel valued

Areas for Improvement

  • Reading, writing and phonics teaching is not effective enough - too many pupils do not secure early reading skills and errors are not consistently addressed
  • Early years teaching lacks precision - children in Reception are not well prepared for Year 1 in phonics, writing and mathematics
  • Leadership priorities lack focus on curriculum quality and achievement - governors do not hold leaders sufficiently to account on teaching and learning

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders and governors fulfil their responsibilities, have created an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Sports clubs, music and performance activities, assemblies, visits to local care homes, community work, residential trips, 'joy team' leadership roles, sports ambassadors

St John's Church of England Primary School is a small, close-knit school where pupils enjoy learning in a calm and purposeful environment guided by Christian values. However, achievement is uneven across subjects, with particular concerns in reading, writing and phonics.
