What This School Does Well

St John Fisher has a warm, supportive learning environment where pupils are proud of their school and teachers. The school excels in writing and phonics, with writing standards now substantially above national levels. Pupils demonstrate excellent behaviour and collaboration, working together respectfully to deepen their understanding across all subjects.

Key Strengths

  • Writing standards substantially improved, with pupils now achieving above national averages by Year 6
  • Phonics teaching is now a strength, with rapid improvement after 2014 dip
  • Pupils' behaviour is excellent - respectful, eager to learn, and collaborative in all lessons
  • Strong early years foundation with above-average good level of development in Reception
  • Specialist teachers enhancing learning in English, mathematics, PE, and multimedia subjects

Areas for Improvement

  • Some inconsistency in marking across classes - not all teachers consistently following the school marking policy
  • Mathematics progress needs strengthening, particularly for more-able pupils who need more problem-solving and reasoning activities
  • Limited opportunities in some classes for pupils to think deeply about mathematical ideas

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with 100% of parents confirming children are kept safe; leaders ensure thorough safeguarding arrangements and respond appropriately to incidents.

Extracurricular Activities

French lessons with secondary school teacher, multimedia tablet work, specialist sports coaching, secondary school transition support

St John Fisher Catholic Primary School continues to be good following its short inspection in March 2016. The newly appointed leadership team has maintained educational quality and made notable improvements, particularly in writing standards.
