What This School Does Well

St Ignatius provides a warm, caring environment where children feel safe and develop strong values. The school has high expectations and delivers effective phonics teaching, with most Year 1 pupils learning to read well. Pupils enjoy good attendance and take pride in supporting their community through charity work and school choir performances.

Key Strengths

  • Strong behaviour culture with pupils understanding and applying the school's three virtues of respect, resilience and responsibility
  • Effective phonics teaching with Year 1 pupils typically learning to read well
  • High pupil attendance rates that are celebrated in assemblies
  • Caring and nurturing environment where pupils feel safe and can share concerns
  • Good personal development curriculum that teaches British values and responds to pupils' needs

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistent delivery of the curriculum across subjects means pupils do not learn consistently well
  • Some activities are not ambitious enough, particularly for pupils with SEND, and do not match their learning needs
  • Checks on pupils' understanding are not used effectively enough to identify and address gaps in knowledge
  • In early years, adult interactions do not build children's vocabulary as well as they should
  • Some pupils with SEND do not get enough practice to meet their targets

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with pupils feeling safe and able to share concerns through worry boxes that staff respond to promptly.

Extracurricular Activities

School choir, trust-wide choral events, guardian angels programme, student ambassadors, community charity events including local food bank support

St Ignatius Catholic Primary School is a caring, community-focused primary school that has experienced leadership changes. However, inspectors found that some aspects of the school's work may not be as strong as at the previous inspection, and the next inspection will be graded.
