What This School Does Well

St Cuthberts is a warm, caring school where children are genuinely happy to attend. The school excels at teaching children to read confidently from an early age and develops their speaking and listening skills through creative storytelling. Pupils behave exceptionally well and learn to care for one another, supported by staff who know them and their families well.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent phonics teaching and early reading - all Year 1 pupils reached expected standard in 2024 phonics screening
  • Strong focus on speaking and listening skills with effective support for children needing additional help
  • Pupils use the local area exceptionally well for learning - beaches, museums, Anglo-Saxon settlements, and weekly swimming lessons
  • Exemplary behaviour and attitudes to learning, with pupils showing care and responsibility for each other
  • Effective support for pupils with SEND following trust review and staff training

Areas for Improvement

  • Core knowledge and themes linking learning together are not identified consistently across all subjects
  • Pupils sometimes find it difficult to link and apply their knowledge fully across the curriculum
  • Need to review curriculum to make core content and links between content explicit for staff delivery

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective, with school creating an open and positive culture that puts pupils' interests first.

Extracurricular Activities

Weekly swimming lessons for Years 1-4, educational visits to local museums, practical investigations on Northumbrian beaches, residential stays at Anglo-Saxon settlement sites, community storytellers visiting school
