What This School Does Well

The school has responded quickly to its inspection findings with a focused improvement plan. New leadership has strengthened how the school uses data to track student progress and intervene when needed. Teachers are increasingly sharing best practice, which is already showing positive results in improving teaching quality and student achievement.

Key Strengths

  • Mathematics progress is improving with key stage 4 results expected to be close to national average
  • Teaching and learning has improved through better lesson observation processes and sharing of best practice from sciences and humanities
  • Tracking and monitoring systems now better identify where interventions are needed, with teachers using data more effectively to plan lessons

Areas for Improvement

  • Progress in English remains slower than mathematics, despite reading age strategies introduced in Years 7 and 8
  • The achievement gap between boys and girls is narrowing but remains significant, particularly in English
  • Further work needed to embed reading, writing, listening and oracy skills across the school

St Cuthbert's Catholic Community College for Business and Enterprise was judged to require improvement in December 2012. This monitoring inspection in May 2013 found that new leadership has implemented an improvement plan with appropriate strategies to address underperformance in English and mathematics and among boys.
