Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

St Augustine's is a caring school where children thrive and feel valued. The early years provision is exceptional, and reading is taught brilliantly with pupils making quick progress. Teachers work hard to support all children to succeed, especially those who find learning challenging or need extra help.

Key Strengths

  • Early years provision is outstanding, with expertly planned activities that help children develop social, communication and learning skills
  • Reading is a priority with consistent phonics teaching, regular progress checks, and well-matched reading books that help pupils learn quickly
  • Broad, ambitious curriculum is well-sequenced so pupils build knowledge over time and make connections between topics
  • Strong support for pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, helping them flourish alongside their peers
  • Pupils develop good character through school virtues, leadership opportunities, assemblies and enrichment activities

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers do not always check pupils' understanding carefully enough, meaning learning activities are not always adapted to correct misconceptions or provide sufficient challenge
  • Too many disadvantaged pupils are frequently absent from school, which prevents them from accessing the full curriculum and achieving their best

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective and leaders have created a positive culture that prioritises pupils' interests.

Extracurricular Activities

Clubs that develop sporting and artistic talents, memorable trips and visits

St Augustine's Catholic Voluntary Academy is a warm and welcoming primary school where pupils are happy and feel safe. The school has improved significantly since its previous inspection and provides caring, individualised support for all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds.
