What This School Does Well
St Andrew's Benn excels at creating a warm, family-like environment where every child feels they belong and are valued. Staff provide excellent pastoral support and work closely with families to remove barriers to learning, with particularly strong provision for pupils with special educational needs. The school has successfully improved reading fluency and times table knowledge, and pupils develop strong personal values including respect, tolerance and kindness.
Key Strengths
- Strong emphasis on pupil wellbeing, personal development and creating a safe, inclusive environment where all pupils feel they belong
- Effective support for children with SEND and vulnerable pupils through tailored interventions and positive relationships
- Good progress in reading fluency and times table knowledge, with staff using effective strategies like vocabulary focus and breaking learning into small steps
- Excellent pastoral care with staff providing emotional and academic support, and an 'open door' policy for pupils to access help
Areas for Improvement
- Many pupils have gaps in writing and handwriting skills which affects their ability to record and communicate knowledge across the curriculum
- Teaching is inconsistent - some teachers do not match learning to what pupils already know, meaning tasks are sometimes too easy or too difficult
- Leaders have identified the right areas for improvement but actions have not led to quick enough progress in outcomes
- School leaders and governors have not identified all the causes of weaknesses, particularly around consistent implementation of new initiatives
Safeguarding
Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and acted upon, and pupils feel safe.
Extracurricular Activities
Competitive sports, musical opportunities, residential trips for older pupils
St Andrew's Benn is an inclusive Church of England primary school where staff know pupils and families extremely well and have created a welcoming community centred around the motto 'We are family'. However, the school needs to improve the consistency of teaching quality and ensure all pupils, particularly those with gaps in writing and handwriting skills, make better progress towards age-related expectations.
