What This School Does Well

This school truly cares about every child and works hard to help them succeed. Staff know pupils well and adapt teaching to meet individual needs, with particular strength in supporting children learning English as an additional language. The school enriches learning through regular outdoor activities, woodland learning, and trips to farms, zoos and theatres - experiences that broaden horizons for all children.

Key Strengths

  • Reading is taught consistently and well using an agreed programme
  • Early years curriculum is ambitious and helps children progress well, especially in language and communication
  • Strong inclusive approach with responsive systems to identify and support pupils with barriers to learning, including those with SEND and English as an additional language
  • Pupils demonstrate positive behaviour and the school is a calm place to learn
  • Regular outdoor learning and enriching trips broaden pupils' experiences and understanding of the world

Areas for Improvement

  • Writing skills are not consistently applied across other subjects - pupils do not routinely show the same secure writing knowledge they have learned in English lessons
  • Some pupils, particularly those with the highest needs, need more precisely tailored learning activities to engage them effectively
  • Staff expertise in supporting pupils with SEND needs further development
  • Some pupils struggle to retain prior learning in the detail needed to strengthen understanding across the wider curriculum

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and concerns are actively identified and acted upon, making pupils safer and helping them feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Woodland area outdoor learning, school council, eco council, visits to farms, zoos, theatre, beach trips, outdoor learning clubs

Springfield Infant School and Nursery provides a broad, well-structured curriculum with particular strengths in reading and early years provision. The school creates a calm, inclusive environment where pupils feel safe and supported.
