What This School Does Well

South Hampshire College Group has created an inclusive, welcoming environment where learners develop strong practical skills through industry-standard resources and experienced staff. The college works closely with local employers to ensure courses teach relevant, up-to-date knowledge needed for real jobs. Adult learners gain confidence and skills they use to improve their lives and communities, with many successfully completing qualifications and progressing.

Key Strengths

  • Inclusive culture where learners behave professionally and treat others with respect
  • Strong progress in vocational education with learners developing knowledge and skills quickly and confidently
  • Industry-standard resources and expert staff training that enhance learning experiences
  • Well-designed adult learning provision responsive to individual needs, with most learners achieving their goals
  • Strong partnerships with employers and stakeholders to develop relevant curriculum in engineering, health, maritime and construction

Areas for Improvement

  • Young people do not attend GCSE English and mathematics lessons at the same high rate as vocational courses
  • Some areas of adult curriculum where learners perform less well, with improvement actions still underway
  • Inconsistent quality in teaching across a very small number of subjects regarding concept explanation and instruction

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - learners and apprentices feel safe, know how to keep themselves safe at college and work, and most recall discussions about risks of extremist views.

Extracurricular Activities

Skills competitions for apprentices, work with police on drink-driving awareness videos, dementia cafe partnership with health and social care learners, creative media projects with Solent University, guest lectures and masterclasses from industry specialists

South Hampshire College Group, formed from the 2023 merger of Fareham, Eastleigh and Southampton Colleges, provides technical and vocational courses from entry level to level 5, alongside apprenticeships and adult learning programmes. The inspection found the college group to be Good overall across all areas assessed.
