Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Sharmans Cross provides a warm, welcoming environment where pupils are happy and feel they belong to the school family. The new leadership team has made impressive improvements to behaviour and attendance, with pupils understanding and taking pride in the school's values. Pupils benefit from excellent pastoral support and a range of enrichment activities that develop their confidence, leadership skills and interests.

Key Strengths

  • Strong behaviour and attendance - pupils behave well and attendance rates are in line with national figures
  • Effective safeguarding with an open, positive culture where pupils feel safe
  • New leadership team is ambitious and has made significant positive impact on school improvement
  • Good pastoral support that helps pupils feel confident, cared for and secure
  • Well-structured curriculum with improved reading and writing approaches

Areas for Improvement

  • Gaps in foundational knowledge - pupils lack basic skills in letter formation, spelling and handwriting that impacts progress across subjects
  • Teaching is not consistently adapted to meet different pupils' needs - most pupils complete the same activities regardless of ability
  • Inconsistent approach to identifying and supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities
  • Lack of robust systems to check pupils' knowledge and understanding across the whole curriculum
  • Variable quality of teacher feedback with next steps not always acted upon

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and pupils are made safer and feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Clubs, trips, residential visits, safeguarding ambassadors, sports ambassadors, school council, enterprise schemes raising money for charity

Sharmans Cross Junior School has recently undergone significant leadership changes and has made strong progress in safeguarding and behaviour. However, the school needs to address gaps in pupils' foundational skills and ensure teaching is consistently adapted to meet all pupils' needs.
