What This School Does Well

Sandy Secondary School creates an inclusive and welcoming environment where every pupil feels valued. Teachers have strong subject knowledge and form positive relationships with students, providing structured support to help them progress. The school is particularly impressive in supporting pupils with additional needs and those who struggle with reading, with dedicated staff and new resources helping pupils build confidence and skills.

Key Strengths

  • Broad curriculum offering including English Baccalaureate options and subjects tailored to individual pupil needs
  • Excellent support for pupils with SEND, including a cognition and learning provision that ensures inclusion
  • Strong reading support with new library and phonics/vocabulary programmes that build pupil confidence
  • Positive behaviour and respect throughout the school with a strong sense of community
  • Well-structured teaching with positive staff-pupil relationships

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils need more opportunities to explain and develop their thinking through discussion and written responses
  • Teachers should use assessment information better to match tasks to pupils' current knowledge and understanding
  • Some pupils are not moved on quickly enough when they have mastered content
  • Governors should gather more independent information rather than relying on what leaders provide

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with trusted support accessible to pupils and a strong culture of safety and well-being.

Extracurricular Activities

Trips, clubs, anti-bullying committee, equality and diversity team, football expertise pathway, personal social and health education programme

Sandy Secondary School is an inclusive school that supports all pupils to achieve their best, with many building projects underway to cater for student needs and interests. Although academic outcomes are not yet strong for all pupils, the school has high expectations and is working hard to improve.
