Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's December 2024 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

This is a warm, inclusive school where children feel valued and safe. The school has made real progress in teaching reading and mathematics, and staff work hard to support all pupils including those learning English as an additional language. Pupils develop into thoughtful citizens who understand the importance of equality and looking after one another.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on reading with high-quality phonics programme and effective catch-up support for struggling readers
  • Positive behaviour throughout the school with excellent attendance improvements through work with families
  • Nurturing, caring environment with warm relationships between staff and pupils that prioritises emotional wellbeing
  • Rich curriculum promoting multiculturalism, British values and social responsibility through pupil leadership roles and community engagement

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils struggle to recall learning over time in some subjects and teachers don't consistently address misconceptions
  • Teaching approaches and curriculum in early years are new; some staff need more support to prepare children effectively for Year 1
  • Teachers don't consistently adapt tasks to meet needs of pupils with SEND, limiting their progress
  • Governors have not held the school accountable strongly enough during the period of low achievement

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with proper systems in place to keep pupils safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Reading Olympics awards, pupil parliament, library and lunch hall leadership roles, extra-curricular trips

Samuel Allsopp Primary and Nursery School is a caring school where pupils are joyful and safe with positive behaviour, but academic achievement across the curriculum remains below expectations despite recent improvements in English and mathematics.
