What it's like to be a pupil at Royal School for the Blind (Liverpool)
Pupils feel like they belong at the school. They are happy and settled in this caring and welcoming school community. Staff make sure that every pupil feels safe, valued and included. They build strong relationships with pupils and know them very well. This means that staff understand each pupil's strengths, interests and needs. As a result, pupils feel secure and ready to learn. They enjoy their lessons and take part with confidence. Even when pupils may find work difficult, they keep trying. They show resilience and perseverance. Staff encourage pupils every step of the way. With a carefully crafted curriculum and staff who respond very effectively to pupils needs, pupils make great progress from their individual starting points. Staff have high expectations for what pupils can achieve and pupils respond positively to the challenge. Across the school, including in the post-16 provision, staff help pupils to become as independent as possible. They support pupils to make choices, manage daily routines and develop the skills they need for adult life. This helps pupils to be very well prepared for the next stage of their education, employment and training. Behaviour in school is highly positive. Staff create a calm and orderly environment for pupils. If bullying were to occur, staff deal with it quickly and effectively. Pupils attend well. Staff work closely with families to support attendance. They put in careful support for pupils and families who may need extra help to attend. The school offers a wide range of experiences that help pupils build confidence and raise their own aspirations for the future. For example, pupils work with the local secondary-age pupils and develop important social and communication skills. These opportunities help them learn how to work with others, try new experiences and feel positive about what they can achieve in the future.
