Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The school has made impressive improvements in behaviour and attendance, creating calm classrooms where pupils can focus. Leadership changes have been significant and positive, with a clear vision that pupils have embraced through new pledges about expectations. The school is particularly effective at supporting pupils who struggle most, using targeted interventions to help them stay in school and learn.

Key Strengths

  • Significant leadership improvements with new principal, vice-principal and SEND coordinator in place, supported by the trust
  • Much better behaviour and discipline - classrooms are calm, disruptive incidents have reduced, and internal truancy has significantly improved
  • Clear school vision and values with pupil pledges that help everyone understand expectations
  • Strong safeguarding culture with staff who understand their roles and pupils who feel safe and valued
  • Effective inclusion hub and targeted interventions helping pupils with greatest challenges return to mainstream learning

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching does not yet consistently check what pupils already know, so gaps are not always addressed effectively
  • Some low-level disruption in classrooms is not always dealt with consistently by staff
  • While pupils with SEND needs are now better understood, support strategies are not always successfully built into everyday teaching
  • Teaching explanations are sometimes not precise enough to help pupils understand key knowledge

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with a strong culture throughout the school, clear staff understanding of responsibilities, secure trust oversight, and pupils who feel safe and valued.

Queen Katharine Academy is a school judged to have serious weaknesses in March 2025. This monitoring inspection in September 2025 found that leaders have made progress in improving the school, but more work is necessary before the serious weaknesses designation can be removed.
