What This School Does Well
Purfleet Primary Academy excels at supporting all children to achieve, particularly in reading where pupils often exceed national averages. The school creates an exceptionally positive and inclusive environment where behaviour is excellent, and every child is made to feel welcome and cared for. Leaders are dedicated to removing barriers to learning and giving all pupils - especially disadvantaged children - enriching experiences and opportunities they might not otherwise have.
Key Strengths
- Pupils achieve well in reading, often above national averages, thanks to well-ordered teaching of phonics and exposure to ambitious texts
- Behaviour across the school is excellent with pupils being polite, respectful and showing positive attitudes to learning
- Strong inclusive practice with effective systems to identify and support pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and those with additional needs
- Leaders are accurate in identifying strengths and areas for improvement, with clear drive to improve outcomes
- Pupils benefit from enriching experiences including trips to museums, theatres and wildlife sites
Areas for Improvement
- In subjects other than English and mathematics, some pupils cannot remember knowledge in enough depth or detail
- Teaching in some subjects and year groups lacks the ambition that leaders intend
- Attendance is improving but not yet in line with national averages for all groups
- Support for pupils with the highest SEND needs is not always precise enough and gaps are not filled quickly enough
- Consistency of questioning across early years classes needs to be strengthened
Safeguarding
Safeguarding standards are met - the school has created an open and positive culture of safeguarding where concerns are actively identified, acted upon and managed, making pupils safer and helping them feel safe.
