Ofsted's report card, in its own words
What it's like to be a pupil at Pot Kiln Primary School
Pupils do not achieve as well as they should. This is because teaching is not consistently effective. Pupils in older year groups have gaps in their reading, writing and mathematics knowledge. In particular, pupils do not recall multiplication facts with sufficient fluency and accuracy. This limits their confidence and success in mathematics. Pupils, including those who are disadvantaged and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, do not build the knowledge and skills they need consistently across the curriculum. As a result, pupils are not prepared well enough for secondary education. Over time, attendance has been too low for some pupils. These pupils miss out on important learning experiences. Some pupils do not receive the support they need to improve their attendance. Typically, pupils arrive at school happy and keen to start their day. They are welcomed warmly by staff. Some pupils who need additional support benefit from wellbeing checks to make sure that they are ready for the day ahead. Pupils and staff have positive and trusting relationships. As a result, pupils feel safe. Most pupils demonstrate positive attitudes to learning. They follow the school rules and usually behave well. Bullying is rare. Pupils are tolerant of others and understand what it means to be different. Children in the Nursery and Reception Years feel especially secure and happy. Staff know children well and care for them closely. They enjoy learning through play in a calm and purposeful environment. Pupils in the early years and key stage 1 acquire the essential reading knowledge and skills that they need. Pupils benefit from a range of experiences and opportunities that enhance the curriculum. Everyone, including pupils who are vulnerable, takes part. When pupils demonstrate particular talents or interests, leaders provide opportunities for these to be developed further. Older pupils take on additional responsibilities and help their younger peers when they need support.
What Ofsted says the school should do next
- Leaders should ensure that teaching is consistently effective in all year groups so that all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, make positive progress and achieve well across the curriculum.
- Leaders should ensure that teachers check pupils' understanding consistently well and adapt teaching promptly to resolve misconceptions and gaps in pupils' knowledge.
- Leaders should ensure that staff identify pupils' needs accurately, understand barriers to learning and act swiftly to address them so that pupils are successful.
- Leaders should check carefully that the school's attendance strategy is having the intended impact and take swift action when needed.
- Leaders should strengthen the school's quality assurance systems so that leaders at all levels identify and act on any areas of weakness quickly.
- Leaders should make sure that their plans for improvement are sufficiently detailed and precise so that governors can hold leaders to account effectively.
