What This School Does Well

Mellor Primary School excels at creating a nurturing environment where every child feels valued and included. The school offers an ambitious curriculum delivered through engaging outdoor learning, memorable trips and enriching clubs that help pupils develop confidence and skills. Pupils achieve well academically while developing into responsible young citizens ready for secondary school.

Key Strengths

  • Pupils achieve well across all subjects with secure understanding in reading, mathematics, science and history
  • Strong behaviour and positive relationships - pupils are polite, respectful and kind to one another
  • Excellent personal development opportunities including trips, residential visits, clubs and leadership roles such as beekeeping and running the eco refill shop
  • Well-established safeguarding culture where concerns are actively identified and managed
  • Staff are well supported and feel valued, creating a positive working environment

Areas for Improvement

  • Some pupils lack fluency in handwriting and letter formation which affects their ability to write longer pieces quickly
  • Teachers do not always encourage pupils to learn from their mistakes, particularly affecting more able pupils who need greater challenge
  • Early years provision is inconsistent - children do not have enough opportunities to build on learning during independent play and spoken language development needs strengthening

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - the school has an open and positive culture of safeguarding where all legal requirements are met and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Choir, dance, girls' football, violin, keyboard, woodwind, beekeeping, eco refill shop, science museum trips, Shakespeare festival performances, residential visits (Years 5 and 6), local green summit and town hall debates

Mellor Primary School is a village school where pupils achieve well across subjects and benefit from a nurturing approach focused on making people shine. The school has strong safeguarding, positive behaviour, and a rich curriculum enhanced by outdoor learning opportunities.
