Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The school provides a strong start in Early Years where children make good progress, and reading skills are developing well with regular guided reading sessions. The new leadership team is working to improve teaching quality and pupil achievement. The school effectively supports pupils with special educational needs and uses additional pupil premium funding to help disadvantaged pupils close attainment gaps.

Key Strengths

  • Early Years (Nursery and Reception) provides a good start with increasingly good pupil progress
  • New leadership team has introduced strategies bringing improvements in teaching and achievement
  • Active governors who understand school performance and hold the school to account
  • Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs are well supported and make good progress
  • Reading progress is accelerating across the school with appropriate guided reading sessions

Areas for Improvement

  • Too few pupils reach expected standards by end of Year 6, particularly in mathematics
  • Teaching quality is inconsistent and does not always challenge all pupils, especially the most able
  • Pupils lack opportunities to write at length across different subjects and apply maths skills to real-life problems
  • Marking, especially in mathematics, does not clearly show pupils how to improve their work
  • Boisterous behaviour outside the classroom makes some pupils feel unsafe

Safeguarding

Safeguarding procedures have been reviewed through scrutiny of documentation relating to child protection and behaviour, though the report does not explicitly state whether safeguarding is effective or not effective.

Extracurricular Activities

breakfast club, educational visits

Low Ash Primary School is a larger than average primary school that requires improvement after being rated good at the previous inspection. Achievement, teaching quality, behaviour, and leadership have all declined since the last review.
