What This School Does Well

Little Kinvaston School excels at helping pupils who have struggled with education in the past to gain confidence and thrive. The school combines a full academic curriculum with an exceptional focus on personal development, helping pupils build resilience, manage their emotions and develop real-world skills. Pupils benefit from extensive, carefully planned experiences like farm work and outdoor learning that give them genuine responsibilities and help them discover their interests and aspirations.

Key Strengths

  • Exceptional provision for developing pupils' confidence, self-esteem and social skills built into every school day
  • Extensive and carefully designed experiences including visits to cycling venues, nature reserves, historic houses and work exploration opportunities
  • Pupils attend well with extremely high attendance and quickly develop skills and knowledge, achieving well after previous educational disruption
  • Strong relationships and positive behaviour supported through an inclusive approach
  • Farm and outdoor learning activities give pupils real responsibilities and opportunities to develop new skills

Areas for Improvement

  • Curriculum has not been fully adapted for the wider range of pupil needs in the school, creating uncertainty about work for newer pupils
  • Insufficient staff trained to teach phonics, meaning some pupils who need this support are not receiving regular phonics teaching and do not read as fluently as they could

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with clear policies and procedures in place to keep pupils safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Farm and animal management, outdoor cooking, den building, cycling activities, nature reserve visits, historic house visits, shopping trips, library visits, locality exploration

Little Kinvaston School is a safe, warm and inclusive school for pupils with special educational needs. Parents describe it as 'life changing' and note that their children gain confidence and thrive here.
