What This School Does Well

Wolgarston is a welcoming school where pupils enjoy coming in and feel confident speaking to adults about concerns. Attendance is excellent and behaviour is positive, creating a calm learning environment. The sixth form is particularly strong, with students achieving highly and progressing successfully to university, apprenticeships and employment.

Key Strengths

  • Excellent attendance and behaviour - well above national average with low suspension rates
  • Outstanding sixth form provision with high exam achievement and strong progression to university, employment and apprenticeships
  • Strong safeguarding culture where pupils feel safe and know who to turn to
  • Passionate support for pupils with additional needs and those facing barriers to learning
  • Well-designed personal development curriculum that builds resilience and prepares pupils for adult life

Areas for Improvement

  • Recent decline in key stage 4 results in some subjects due to staffing changes
  • Inconsistency in how teachers support pupils with barriers to learning across all lessons
  • Need for more precise literacy and numeracy catch-up programmes for pupils joining with weak skills
  • Disadvantaged pupils' progress has slipped from previously well above national average to in line with peers

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have created an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Animal therapy day, charity events, discussion groups, enrichment activities

Wolgarston High School is a well-led school with strong attendance and behaviour standards, and an excellent sixth form that prepares students very well for their next steps. However, recent staffing changes have impacted achievement in some subjects, and the school is working to maintain previously high attainment levels.
