Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Laurel Lane is an inclusive, welcoming school where children are happy, safe and well cared for. The school has worked hard to improve behaviour and create a calm environment, supported by strong relationships with families. Early years provision is particularly strong, preparing children well for Year 1.

Key Strengths

  • Strong behaviour policy with pupils behaving well in lessons and at break times
  • Effective early years provision where children develop secure social, emotional and learning skills
  • Improved phonics teaching with regular progress checks to help pupils catch up quickly
  • Strong pastoral support and positive relationships with families and the community
  • Well-led school with clear priorities for improvement and good staff morale

Areas for Improvement

  • Assessment not used precisely enough to identify and address gaps in pupils' knowledge
  • Some staff lack sufficient subject knowledge to deliver the curriculum effectively
  • Inconsistent quality of learning experiences, particularly for pupils with SEND
  • Some pupils struggle with blending sounds when reading, making reading laboured
  • Curriculum not implemented consistently across all classes and subjects

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with systems in place to address concerns and keep pupils safe.

Laurel Lane Primary School requires improvement in the quality of education, though behaviour, attitudes, personal development, and leadership are rated good. The school has undergone significant changes with new leadership and is working to raise standards across the curriculum.
