What This School Does Well

Holy Family Catholic Primary School provides a welcoming, lively learning environment where children receive individual attention and make good progress. The school has built a particularly strong reading culture that parents value, and staff work closely with families - including offering opportunities for parents to learn alongside their children. Disadvantaged pupils thrive here thanks to focused support and effective use of additional funding.

Key Strengths

  • Strong leadership team that has driven continuous improvement and tackled previous inspection recommendations effectively
  • Good progress across early years and key stage 1, with most able pupils being successfully challenged to work at the highest levels
  • Excellent reading culture with pupils becoming avid readers, supported by effective phonics teaching
  • Good progress in mathematics with pupils developing depth of understanding through well-targeted problem-solving
  • Disadvantaged pupils making good progress with effective use of pupil premium funding and improved attendance

Areas for Improvement

  • Science attainment needs to continue improving - Year 6 pupils' attainment was slightly below national figures in 2016
  • Pupils' writing skills still need further development, particularly for boys
  • System for recording vetting checks on staff needs to be clearer and more rigorously monitored
  • Communication with some parents could be strengthened - a small group still hold negative views

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with a strong culture of protection, well-trained staff who know pupils and families well, and pupils feeling safe and confident in reporting concerns.

Holy Family Catholic Primary School continues to be good, with strong leadership that has maintained educational quality since the previous inspection in 2012. The school has successfully tackled previous areas for development, particularly in mathematics, and has built a welcoming learning community based on Catholic values.
