What it's like to be a pupil at Hollywater School

There have recently been significant changes in leadership at the school. Pupils are starting to benefit from the recent improvements that leaders are making across all areas of the school's work. Leaders have now ensured that systems are available for staff to reduce barriers to learning and wellbeing for the pupils. However, pupils do not always benefit from staff consistently using these systems and strategies, such as those to support communication. Most pupils now have access to a well-planned curriculum, but they do not all make progress through it as well as they could. This is due to inconsistencies in teaching across the school. Pupils arrive each day happy to be at school. They are valued and their needs are understood well by caring staff. Pupils trust staff and know that they will support them. The school is calm and orderly and pupils feel safe. Bullying is rare and dealt with effectively. Pupils welcome visitors enthusiastically and treat them with courtesy, respect and warmth. They are proud to be a part of the school. Leaders want everyone to feel included in school life. Pupils understand how to stay safe, including when online. Classrooms are calm and purposeful, shaped by the nurturing relationships between staff and pupils that are evident across the school. Pupils behave well at break and lunchtimes and they socialise well together. Leaders prioritise attendance and pupils want to come to school. Pupils benefit from a well considered and appropriate programme of personal development that extends beyond the taught curriculum. All pupils have access to wider enrichment opportunities, including horse riding, outdoor activities and a range of trips. These activities help pupils to develop resilience and confidence and to take managed risks in the school's outdoor environment and beyond. This prepares them for adulthood and life beyond the school gates.

What Ofsted says the school should do next

  • Leaders should ensure that there is coherent oversight of inclusion, so that pupils' needs are accurately identified and met and leaders are able to effectively evaluate the impact of their work.
  • Leaders should ensure that their strategies to improve how well students can access the curriculum, specifically being supported to develop appropriate communication skills, are embedded across the school from early years through to post-16.
  • Leaders should ensure that staff develop their expertise to consistently deliver the intended curriculum to meet pupils' complex learning needs effectively, across the school.
  • Leaders and governors must develop a robust understanding of their roles and responsibilities and ensure that oversight results in improvements being enacted swiftly.

What This School Does Well

Hollywater School excels at creating a caring, inclusive environment where pupils feel happy, safe and valued. Staff build strong relationships with pupils and provide extensive opportunities for personal development, work experience, and community engagement including residential experiences and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Leaders prioritise attendance and behaviour through tailored support, resulting in calm classrooms where pupils develop independence and confidence for their future.

Key Strengths

  • Strong attendance focus with personalised strategies that help families and pupils engage with school
  • Pupils behave well with positive relationships between staff and students, and rare bullying incidents
  • Comprehensive personal development programme including work experience, Duke of Edinburgh's Award, and enrichment activities like horse riding and outdoor pursuits
  • Effective safeguarding culture where concerns are actively identified and managed, and pupils feel safe
  • Caring and nurturing environment where pupils develop confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistent use of agreed teaching strategies and communication approaches prevents some pupils from making expected progress in curriculum subjects
  • Variable quality of teaching across year groups and early years, with adults not consistently modelling communication and learning
  • Progress in curriculum knowledge is not secure for all pupils, particularly in academic subjects compared to personal development
  • Early years teaching lacks precision in modelling communication, reducing opportunities for children to practise new learning
  • Post-16 students have not achieved as well as they could, though recent curriculum changes are beginning to address this

Safeguarding

Safeguarding standards are met - leaders have established an open culture where safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, concerns are actively identified and managed, and pupils feel safe.

Extracurricular Activities

Horse riding, outdoor activities, Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, work experience, residential experiences, trips within local community, enterprise opportunities, alternative provision for small number of pupils

Hollywater School is a special school where leaders have recently made significant changes to improve educational experiences. While safeguarding is effective and pupils behave well, the school needs to improve consistency in teaching quality and curriculum delivery across all year groups.
