What This School Does Well
Holly Lodge provides a caring environment where girls feel safe and supported by staff who know them well. The school excels at promoting good behaviour and positive relationships between students of different backgrounds. Students receive excellent careers guidance to prepare them for their futures, and the sixth form delivers good teaching and strong progress.
Key Strengths
- Students behave well, are courteous, and feel safe - bullying is rare and dealt with swiftly
- Strong care and positive relationships between staff and students
- Good promotion of British values and students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
- Good careers advice and guidance to prepare students for their futures
- Sixth form leadership is good and students make strong progress
Areas for Improvement
- GCSE results are well below national average - only a small proportion of students gain five good passes including English and maths
- Progress of higher and lower ability students is not rapid enough
- Teaching quality is too variable and inconsistent across the school
- Marking and assessment do not consistently help students understand how to improve
- Gap in progress between disadvantaged students and classmates remains too wide despite pupil premium funding
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective - staff deal swiftly with any bullying, discrimination, racism or homophobia, and students report feeling well looked after and safe in school.
Holly Lodge Girls' College is a smaller than average girls' secondary school that requires improvement. The school has declined from its previous Good rating due to below-average GCSE results and inconsistent teaching quality, though behaviour and sixth form provision remain strong.
