Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's March 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Hagley Catholic High School excels at creating a supportive environment where pupils thrive both personally and academically. Teachers are skilled at explaining new concepts clearly and pupils achieve well in external examinations. The school works hard to ensure all pupils - including those with additional needs and disadvantaged pupils - have equal access to enriching experiences like theatre trips, museum visits and opportunities abroad.

Key Strengths

  • Warm, caring school ethos with high expectations for all pupils
  • Teachers use strong subject knowledge and varied teaching approaches to help pupils build skills and understanding
  • Excellent support for pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, including full curriculum access
  • Calm, orderly environment where pupils are well-behaved, respectful and feel safe
  • Extensive range of lunchtime clubs and enrichment activities including trips, theatre visits and museum visits

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers do not consistently use information about pupil progress to adapt learning activities, so some pupils struggle with work that is too hard
  • Reading improvement strategies have been recently introduced but the school has not yet evaluated whether they are working effectively
  • Need to develop processes to check if reading strategies are improving reading fluency and wider reading habits

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with pupils knowing how to report bullying and confident that adults will deal with it promptly.

Extracurricular Activities

Competitive sports, crochet, theatre trips, museum visits, trips abroad, character culture and formation lessons, sixth-form tutorial programme, student leadership opportunities, charitable activities

Hagley Catholic High School has maintained its good standards since the previous inspection. The school combines a warm, caring ethos with strong academic achievement, where pupils enjoy attending and are well-supported by teachers.
