Gentleshaw is a happy, welcoming community where children quickly develop a love of learning. The school provides excellent enrichment opportunities including residential visits and visits from professionals to help build pupils' aspirations. Leaders genuinely care about families and work hard to support them, which is helping to build stronger relationships with parents.

Areas for Improvement
- Teaching quality varies too much between classrooms, particularly in history and other foundation subjects, meaning some pupils struggle to remember and apply their learning
- Staff lack expertise in early reading and writing, and reading interventions are not always effective
- Some staff do not have sufficient expertise to support pupils with special educational needs effectively
- Early years staff sometimes miss opportunities to extend children's language and communication skills
- Approach to using pupil premium funding is not strategic enough to close academic gaps quickly enough
