What This School Does Well
English Martyrs is a friendly, welcoming school where pupils enjoy learning and attendance is strong. The school has made excellent progress in reading, with phonics results now better than most schools. The school places strong emphasis on spiritual development and creates an orderly, inspiring environment where pupils' work is celebrated.
Key Strengths
- Reading is now good with pupils achieving well, particularly in phonics checks (75% in 2013, better than most schools)
- Strong spiritual, moral, social and cultural development with spirituality and prayer central to the school
- School environment is orderly and well-kept with attractive displays celebrating pupils' work
- Pupils enjoy school, are friendly and courteous, with better than average attendance rates
- Leaders and governors have good understanding of the school and their actions are starting to have positive impact
Areas for Improvement
- Progress in writing is far slower than in most schools and attainment has been below national average for three years
- Not enough good or better teaching - work is sometimes too hard or too easy and pupil misunderstandings not picked up quickly
- Pupil behaviour requires improvement as some are not attentive and behaviour policies not always followed
- Record-keeping for behaviour and safety requires improvement to track patterns and ensure closer monitoring
- More able pupils sometimes given work that is too easy, limiting their progress
Safeguarding
Adequate systems are in place to keep pupils safe, but record-keeping for behaviour logs and risk assessments requires improvement to maintain closer checks on behaviour and safety.
English Martyrs Roman Catholic Primary School requires improvement after previously being rated good. Changes in staffing over the past two years have been challenging, and while leaders are making improvements, these are at early stages and have not yet sufficiently impacted teaching or achievement.
