Ofsted's report card, in its own words

What it's like to be a pupil at Earby Springfield Primary School

In this small school, pupils are known incredibly well. They feel a deep sense of belonging that stems from positive relationships with staff. Pupils benefit from the school's nurturing ethos, in which their pastoral needs are anticipated and addressed quickly. Right from the early years, pupils feel comfortable and safe. Most attend school regularly. Pupils of all ages are encouraged to have fun together while supporting each other. For instance, morning yoga and dance sessions bring older and younger pupils together in shared activity. Similarly, Year 6 pupils support children in the early years to settle into school and learn its routines, such as how to get their lunch and how to clear up after themselves. In ways such as these, pupils learn what it means to be part of a community and to accept others as they are. This helps to ensure that incidents of bullying are rare. Starting in the early years, children are taught behaviours that help them to make the most of learning time. This is reflected in pupils' attitudes during lessons, which are typically studious. At breaktimes, pupils play games exuberantly, such as hide and seek or chase. Well-established routines help most pupils to move smoothly back to lessons when the time comes. Pupils relish the wealth of extra-curricular activities on offer. Whether tending to pumpkins on the school's allotment, honing their chess skills or preparing for sports competitions, pupils enthusiastically embrace opportunities to discover new interests. Leaders have taken effective action to improve the quality of education that the school provides. As such, pupils of all ages benefit from an ambitious and logically ordered curriculum that is typically taught well. Pupils with any barriers to their learning or wellbeing benefit from additional support, when needed. Pupils, including the high proportion who are disadvantaged, develop the knowledge and skills that they need to be ready for their secondary education.

What Ofsted says the school should do next

  • Leaders should ensure that staff consistently take the starting points of pupils in Years 1 to 6 into account when designing learning activities, so that pupils access and embed learning successfully across the curriculum.
  • Leaders should ensure that staff's expectations of pupils' handwriting remain consistently high, so that pupils apply and embed their literacy knowledge successfully in all subjects.
  • Leaders should continue to refine and embed the curriculum and teaching in the early years, so that learning activities consistently enable children to build knowledge securely across all areas of learning.
