What This School Does Well
Coates Lane is a warm, welcoming school where children are happy and enjoy learning. The school excels at teaching reading through its phonics programme and providing great support for all learners, including those with additional needs. Children benefit from excellent personal development that helps them understand their own feelings and become caring, responsible citizens.
Key Strengths
- Strong focus on reading with effective phonics teaching and a love of books across the school
- Excellent support for pupils with SEND, who are fully included and work towards the same curriculum goals
- Well-designed personal development programme that helps pupils understand their feelings and prepares them for modern Britain
- Positive behaviour and attitudes to learning, with effective support for pupils who struggle
- Wide range of enrichment opportunities including clubs, visits and residential trips
Areas for Improvement
- Writing curriculum does not clearly set out the knowledge and skills pupils need for grammar, punctuation and handwriting, making it harder for teachers to help pupils write fluently and accurately
- Some pupils have gaps in knowledge that teachers do not always identify and address quickly enough, making it difficult to connect new learning with what they already know
Safeguarding
Safeguarding arrangements are effective.
Extracurricular Activities
After-school sports clubs, museum visits, concerts, adventurous residential trips
