Ofsted's report card from its 13 January 2026 inspection grades Downlands Community School on 7 areas: 4 expected standard and 3 needs attention. Report cards replaced single-word judgements in November 2025, on a five-point scale from exceptional to urgent improvement.

Attendance and behaviour - Expected standard. "Pupils enjoy coming to school."

Early years - Expected standard. "The ‘Dandelions' nursery class and the Reception class provide a well‑organised and purposeful environment that prepares children well for their transition to key stage 1."

Inclusion - Expected standard. "Leaders are highly inclusive in their work to support pupils."

Personal development and wellbeing - Expected standard. "Pupils gain positively from a comprehensive and well‑planned approach to their personal development."

Achievement - Needs attention. "Some pupils do not gain the skills they need in mathematics or writing as securely or as quickly as they could."

Curriculum and teaching - Needs attention. "Some parts of the curriculum are not implemented precisely enough to enable pupils to practise their skills effectively."

Leadership and governance - Needs attention. "The systems leaders use to understand the impact of their work are not yet embedded or robust enough to give them a reliable picture."

Safeguarding standards were met.

Ofsted's next steps for the school: "• Leaders should ensure that learning activities are carefully designed so that pupils are not limited by the task and can build on what they already know, applying this confidently to new learning. • Leaders should establish rigorous and precise systems for checking how well their work is making a difference, so they can make reliable decisions about what to improve next. • Leaders need to ensure that recent curriculum developments, such as the approach to early writing, are implemented securely so that more pupils make the progress expected from their starting points".

From the headteacher's welcome: "Nevertheless, my colleagues and I are always happy to speak over the phone or in person so please do get in touch if you need to know more. I was appointed as Headteacher of Downlands Community School in September 2019 and this is my 2nd headship."

The school runs a breakfast club from 7:45am and after-school care.

In 2025, 54% of Year 6 pupils at Downlands Community School reached the expected standard in reading and 65% in maths. At the average state primary the figures were 74% and 71% in Dorset and 77% and 75% across England.

Results fell from 65% in reading and 65% in maths in 2024.

With small year groups, a few pupils can move these figures by several points.

For September 2026 entry, 21 families put Downlands Community School as their first choice and 24 named it as one of their preferences, for 22 places offered. It had fewer first-choice applications than places. Every family who put it first was offered a place there for 2026 entry.

Each of them had higher 2025 results than Downlands Community School.

11 parents answered Ofsted's Parent View survey about Downlands Community School (as of April 2026): 73% would recommend the school, 64% say their child is happy there and 33% of those with a view say bullying is dealt with well.

The strongest agreement was that they are kept well informed about progress (82%); the weakest, that the school deals with bullying well (among parents with a view) (33%).

4.5% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, well below the average state school (25%), and 36.8% speak English as an additional language, against 18.8% on average, according to the 2026 school census.

The largest ethnic groups are White British (59%) and Asian (34%).

In 2026, 58 pupils (28.9%) received SEN support and 10 (5%) had an education, health and care plan, against 16.2% and 4.6% at the average state school. The most common need among them is speech, language and communication needs.
