Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

This school excels at supporting pupils who have missed significant time in education, building their confidence and helping them progress through an ambitious curriculum. Pupils benefit from respectful, caring staff who listen to them and from a strong personal development programme that prepares them well for their next steps. The school creates a calm, orderly environment where pupils with complex SEND needs can thrive emotionally and socially.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on building pupils' confidence, self-esteem and engagement through personalised individual learning plans -
  • Excellent personal development offer including Duke of Edinburgh's Award, careers guidance and work experience -
  • Effective behaviour management with clear routines and expectations, resulting in reduced behaviour incidents -
  • Staff know pupils well and respond promptly to their emotional and academic needs -
  • Improved attendance through careful monitoring and bespoke support packages for pupils and families

Areas for Improvement

  • Assessment of secondary pupils' reading does not identify gaps precisely enough, particularly for early readers, allowing misconceptions to persist -
  • Some staff lack secure knowledge of foundation subject curriculums and do not check pupils' knowledge effectively -
  • In some subjects, learning activities do not help pupils secure knowledge and understanding well enough

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with staff vigilant to changes in pupils' manner and appearance and making appropriate adaptations to support pupil wellbeing.

Extracurricular Activities

Duke of Edinburgh's Award, work experience placements, careers guidance programmes

The Forum Centre is a special education pupil referral unit serving pupils aged 5-16 with SEND, including social, emotional and mental health needs. The school has maintained its good standards and provides an ambitious curriculum that helps most pupils achieve recognised qualifications.
