Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Crook Log Primary School excels at creating an engaging learning environment where children feel safe and happy. Teachers use interesting activities to develop skills across all subjects, with particularly strong support for pupils with special needs and those eligible for pupil premium funding. The school makes excellent use of outdoor spaces including Forest School sessions to boost children's confidence and independence.

Key Strengths

  • Good teaching across the school with some outstanding lessons, particularly in Early Years and Forest School activities
  • Pupils make good progress from starting points, with above-average results in mathematics and proportions achieving highest levels twice the national average
  • Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs make good progress with carefully planned support
  • Pupils enjoy school, behave well, feel safe, and have positive attitudes to learning
  • Strong governing body that rigorously assesses school performance and holds leaders to account

Areas for Improvement

  • Not enough teaching is outstanding - some teachers don't recognise when more-able pupils are ready to start work and don't need further instructions
  • Some teachers in lower year groups plan work that isn't challenging enough, especially for more-able pupils
  • Initiatives to improve parents' and carers' understanding of the importance of regular attendance and avoiding term-time holidays have not yet had impact

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective with thorough procedures in place for child protection, attendance monitoring, bullying incidents and behaviour management.

Extracurricular Activities

Forest School sessions

Crook Log Primary School is a good school where pupils make good progress from their starting points, with mathematics standards above average and reading and writing broadly average. The headteacher and leaders are highly ambitious with clear improvement plans that are regularly checked.
