What This School Does Well
Coventry University has made substantial progress in improving its apprenticeship programmes. Leaders have implemented new quality processes and data systems that help identify struggling apprentices early, while governors now have strong oversight of performance. The university is successfully supporting more apprentices to complete their qualifications and has significantly reduced the number taking breaks in learning.
Key Strengths
- Leaders have developed strong quality improvement processes with new data dashboards that provide clear insights from course to provider level
- Governors now receive detailed information on apprenticeship performance and actively challenge and support improvement plans
- Teaching staff have received targeted training on apprenticeship principles and now use starting points more effectively to plan learning
- The proportion of apprentices achieving their qualification has improved, particularly in civil engineering and senior leader programmes
- Leaders have successfully reduced breaks in learning through stricter approval processes and improved support for returning apprentices
Areas for Improvement
- Teaching observations for apprenticeships need further development to ensure all programmes meet leaders' high expectations
- In occupational therapy, tutors have started using starting points but are not yet using this information to individualise learning for individual apprentices
- For apprenticeships offering merit or distinction grades, teachers do not routinely use starting point information to help apprentices achieve the higher grades they are capable of in end-point assessments
Coventry University is a higher education institution that was previously judged to require improvement. This monitoring visit in March 2025 evaluated progress on the main areas for improvement identified at the previous inspection.
