What This School Does Well
Hillfields provides an outstanding nursery experience where children progress rapidly in their learning through engaging activities and excellent teaching. Parents highly value the school, describing it as 'excellent' and appreciating the warm relationships, caring staff, and helpful workshops. The school is particularly successful at ensuring all children, including those with additional needs or disadvantages, achieve equally well and are prepared for their next stage of education.
Key Strengths
- Children make very fast progress, particularly in writing and mathematics, starting from lower than typical starting points
- Excellent teaching and engaging curriculum that captures children's imaginations
- Outstanding behaviour and positive relationships between children, with warm and caring staff
- Strong safeguarding practices with regular staff training and careful monitoring of each child
- Effective support for disadvantaged children and those with special educational needs
Areas for Improvement
- Independent reading activities are less engaging, so children show less interest and don't reach as high standards as in other areas
- Some plans for disadvantaged children don't fully address barriers such as lower attendance rates
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective, with staff receiving regular training on matters including female genital mutilation, child sexual exploitation and Prevent duty, and leaders working closely with external agencies to support children of concern.
Hillfields Nursery School continues to be outstanding, with children making very fast progress across all areas of learning. The headteacher and senior teacher have maintained excellent quality education since the last inspection in 2013.
