Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Cove School creates a caring environment where pupils feel supported and behave well. The school has successfully improved attendance and reduced suspensions by working closely with pupils who need support. The school offers a broad curriculum that helps pupils understand the world around them and make informed choices about their futures.

Key Strengths

  • Good behaviour and attitudes, with calm social times and focused lessons
  • Effective work to improve pupil attendance to average levels and reduce suspensions
  • Strong personal development curriculum covering healthy relationships, mental health, and careers guidance
  • Range of enrichment clubs and opportunities for pupil leadership
  • Positive and supportive school culture for staff

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistent delivery of curriculum across the school with too much variation in teaching quality
  • Delayed identification of pupils with SEND and reading difficulties, leading to inadequate support
  • High turnover of temporary supply staff slowing down improvement efforts
  • Governors lack sufficient knowledge about educational quality and impact of improvements
  • Leaders not acting with enough urgency to raise educational standards

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with the school creating a positive and open culture that prioritises pupil safety.

Extracurricular Activities

Sporting activities, instrumental lessons, choir

Cove School is a secondary school where pupils are generally happy and behaviour is good, but the quality of education requires improvement because the curriculum is not delivered consistently well and some pupils, particularly those with SEND or reading difficulties, have not achieved as highly as they should.
