Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

The school has strong leadership that is successfully turning things around after a dip in results. Pupils feel safe and happy at school, with excellent behaviour and positive attitudes to learning. Recent improvements in teaching have led to better progress in reading, writing and maths, with disadvantaged pupils catching up quickly.

Key Strengths

  • Strong school leadership with swift action to address weaknesses and improve teaching quality
  • Excellent relationships and behaviour - pupils feel safe and enjoy school
  • Good progress now being made in reading, writing and mathematics after recent improvements
  • Effective support for pupils with special educational needs and those eligible for pupil premium funding
  • Motivating and enthusiastic curriculum that engages pupils

Areas for Improvement

  • Marking and feedback to pupils is inconsistent, especially in mathematics
  • Work for more-able pupils is not challenging enough in lessons
  • Limited opportunities for pupils to apply numeracy skills in other subject areas like topic work
  • Teachers miss chances to encourage extended vocabulary in writing
  • Pupils' individual targets not used consistently across the school

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective with good behaviour management and bullying not identified as an issue by pupils or parents.

Extracurricular Activities

School trip, enterprise activities

Cotwall End Primary School is a larger than average primary school that requires improvement. While leadership and behaviour are good, teaching quality and pupil achievement need to improve, particularly for more-able pupils.
