What This School Does Well
Carpenters does an excellent job with younger children, particularly in Early Years and Key Stage 1, where children make strong progress. The school has a warm, respectful culture where pupils feel happy and safe. Recent leadership changes have begun to improve teaching and set more ambitious targets for all pupils.
Key Strengths
- Early Years Foundation Stage children make good progress with well-focused teaching
- Key Stage 1 has improved significantly, especially in reading and writing through effective phonics teaching
- Good behaviour and positive school culture - pupils feel happy and safe
- Strong spiritual, moral, social and cultural development helps pupils become well-rounded individuals
- School leaders have made rapid improvements in early Key Stage 2 and set more challenging targets
Areas for Improvement
- Achievement in mathematics and Key Stage 2 is not good enough - progress has been inconsistent
- Teaching is not consistently good across all year groups - work is sometimes too easy or too difficult
- More able pupils are not challenged enough to think deeply and explain their answers in detail
- Writing skills are not developed consistently across all subjects
- Marking lacks detail in some classes - pupils need clearer guidance on how to reach the next level
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective - the school's work to keep pupils safe and secure is good, with pupils having strong awareness of personal safety and understanding of bullying.
Extracurricular Activities
Sports clubs including zumba, judo, boxercise
Carpenters Primary School requires improvement overall. While behaviour and leadership are good, achievement and teaching quality need to improve, particularly in mathematics and Key Stage 2.
