What This School Does Well

This school excels at quickly building trust with pupils and supporting their emotional wellbeing alongside their learning. Staff have high aspirations for every pupil and work hard to help them successfully move on to mainstream schools or employment. The school offers excellent real-world experiences including work placements, university visits and vocational qualifications to prepare pupils for their futures.

Key Strengths

  • Staff quickly build strong relationships with pupils and support them to understand and manage their emotions and behaviour
  • School provides a well-sequenced curriculum with vocational learning opportunities (construction, motor mechanics, health and beauty) to prepare pupils for adulthood
  • Pupils are given enriching experiences beyond the classroom and supported to successfully reintegrate to mainstream schools or other settings
  • Staff receive excellent training from school experts and multi-agency professionals to support pupils' behaviour and wellbeing
  • School works intensively with pupils, parents and professionals to improve attendance rates

Areas for Improvement

  • Teachers do not routinely check pupils' understanding in all lessons, meaning some misconceptions and gaps in knowledge are not identified or addressed
  • Support for the small number of pupils with significant phonics gaps is not yet finely tuned to their individual needs
  • Staff need further training to help weaker readers develop fluency and catch up quickly
