Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's January 2025 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Byron Wood is a welcoming, caring school where all pupils - including those new to the country or education - settle quickly and feel part of a proud, diverse community. The school excels at developing children's language skills and early reading through well-planned teaching and high-quality books. Staff work hard to help every child access the curriculum and develop important life skills alongside their academic learning.

Key Strengths

  • Strong focus on teaching early reading through a structured phonics programme with carefully matched books
  • Thoughtfully developed curriculum that meets the specific needs of pupils with English as an additional language
  • Teachers have strong subject knowledge and adapt learning so pupils build on what they already know
  • Staff instil good behaviour from early years, with consistent rewards and sanctions that pupils find fair
  • Pupils develop secure understanding of difference and respect for diverse cultures and traditions

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupil attendance is too low for some children due to extended leave, causing them to miss important learning
  • Staff do not consistently make curriculum adaptations for pupils with SEND across all wider subject areas
  • Some older pupils have not developed enthusiasm for reading and do not appreciate the benefits of reading

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with caring adults helping pupils feel safe and supported.

Extracurricular Activities

Breakfast club, farm visits for younger pupils

Byron Wood Primary Academy is a Good school serving a diverse community with high pupil mobility. Many pupils arrive with limited English language skills, and the school has designed its curriculum to prioritize language development and essential skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
