What This School Does Well
Brook Primary excels at supporting children with challenging behaviour and learning difficulties, helping them make good progress from very low starting points. The school creates a calm, orderly environment with positive relationships and individual support for every pupil. Reading skills are a particular strength, with rigorous phonics teaching in Key Stage 1 leading to fluent, confident readers by Year 6 who can discuss literature knowledgeably.
Key Strengths
- Pupils achieve well across the school, with above-average attainment in Year 1 phonics and good progress from low starting points
- Teaching is almost always good, enabling pupils to make at least good progress and reach broadly average attainment by Year 6
- Pupils in the behavioural, social and emotional needs unit make good progress because of effective support and high-quality staff training
- Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage make rapid progress through exciting activities
- Efficient leadership and governing body ensure money is spent well, with additional staff supporting those who need it most
Areas for Improvement
- Not enough teaching is outstanding - teachers sometimes talk for too long and give pupils insufficient opportunity to practise speaking skills
- Pupils, particularly the more able, are not always challenged to work quickly enough, especially in writing
- Some pupils do not complete enough work in the time allowed due to tasks that are not challenging enough
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is effective - the school provides a safe and secure environment where pupils behave well and feel secure.
