Ofsted Insights

From Ofsted's November 2024 inspection report.

What This School Does Well

Brompton Academy has transformed rapidly under new leadership with much-improved teaching and a fairer behaviour system that makes pupils feel secure. The school is genuinely ambitious for all pupils, particularly those with SEND, and provides excellent pastoral support through their 'Umbrella' programme. Pupils are proud to attend and sixth-formers actively help younger students through mentoring and community activities.

Key Strengths

  • Recent improvements to curriculum design mean knowledge is now sequenced logically and pupils feel better prepared for their next steps
  • Behaviour has improved significantly - pupils respond well to fair, clearly understood expectations and feel safe at school
  • Strong support for pupils with SEND through the specialist Eliot Centre, with staff making thoughtful adaptations to meet individual needs
  • Sixth-form students value the wide range of subjects and receive excellent careers education to help with future plans
  • Regular, precise feedback helps pupils quickly fill gaps in their knowledge and build confidence

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching of newer curriculums in key stage 3 is not yet consistently effective - some pupils are not building knowledge and understanding as well as they could
  • Reading support programmes are at an early stage and reading ability checks are not systematic enough - some pupils with gaps in reading skills are not being identified for help
  • Some pupils do not attend regularly enough, though the school is taking swift action to reduce absence

Safeguarding

Safeguarding arrangements are effective, with staff painstakingly understanding local risks and teaching pupils how to stay safe and healthy.

Extracurricular Activities

Clubs and activities to help pupils develop talents and interests, sixth-form mentoring, reading practice support

Brompton Academy is a secondary comprehensive school that has made rapid improvements since the previous inspection. The school is now rated Good across all key areas, with strong leadership, positive behaviour, and ambitious teaching.
