Ofsted Insights

What This School Does Well

Brimsham Green creates a safe, orderly community where students are well-behaved and respected. The school has strong relationships between staff and students, with teachers now providing helpful feedback on their work. Mathematics teaching has noticeably improved, and disabled students receive excellent support to help them achieve well.

Key Strengths

  • Strong leadership from the headteacher with clear determination to improve the school
  • Students attend regularly, behave well, and are kept very safe
  • Very positive relationships between teachers and students with improved marking and feedback
  • Mathematics teaching has considerably improved
  • Excellent support for disabled students and those with special educational needs

Areas for Improvement

  • Teaching quality is inconsistent, particularly in English and at Key Stage 3, with activities not always pitched at the right difficulty level
  • Student progress and GCSE achievement have not been high enough, especially for disadvantaged students
  • Sixth form achievement is too low and course matching to student needs needs improvement
  • Subject leaders do not consistently monitor teaching standards rigorously enough
  • Governors have not held school leaders sufficiently accountable for progress and teaching quality

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is effective - the school keeps students very safe and actively discourages discrimination while promoting tolerance and respect.

Extracurricular Activities

After-school sports and music programmes, community partnerships, partnership with Hosanna School in Uganda, volunteering opportunities, vocational courses at Filton College and KTS Training

Brimsham Green School is a larger-than-average secondary school that requires improvement after previously being rated good. Recent years have seen insufficient student progress and lower-than-expected GCSE results, particularly in English.
